Texas was named after the Indian word, "Tejas", which means friendship, and when in Wharton, Texas that small town friendship is a reality.   Pulitzer Prize winner and Playwright, of To Kill A Mockingbird, Horton Foote and TV News Anchor Dan Rather were both residents of the Small Town of Wharton. Both were internationally known and have helped carve the history books of our nation.

Wharton is proud of our community and the people living here. Wharton has Affordable Housing and is home to Wharton County Junior College, providing plays, musicals and baseball events. The Historic Plaza Theater comes alive with community plays and the Country Club is a great place for socializing, golf and swimming. Wharton has a Regional Airport located just south of the City on Hwy 59 (Future I-69).

Herman Memorial Group is located just off Hwy 59 and Wharton has a variety of local businesses and cultural institutions.
