*UPDATE* Recovery Resources

Sep. 7, 2017

In response to conflicting information

WEDC and the Wharton Chamber are working diligently to identify resources and streamline processes to help our businesses get the help they need.  The procedure  is as follows:

Individual businesses are not eligible for FEMA funds but SHOULD register with FEMA prior to applying to SBA for loans. The loans are 3.3% and can go out to 30-year terms.  THE LINKS BELOW WILL ALLOW YOU TO DO ALL ON LINE.  Or FEMA has field representatives at the Wharton Civic Center.  We are working to get an SBA office opened in Wharton ASAP.

FEDERAL  RESOURCES:

The goal of the Disaster Assistance Improvement Program is to improve access to disaster information and make applying for disaster assis- tance easier. This is not just the beginning of the U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA’s) grant process, but it is also the gatekeeper for assistance from the federal government. For business owners, that assistance will include SBA disaster loans which will be available. Individuals and businesses must register to secure resources. This is an important step of the recovery process that is not well understood.

  • FEMA, under the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), acts as the managing partner. The site allows you to find disaster assistance that meets individual needs, learn more about the 70 forms of assistance from 17 federal agencies, apply and determine status for disaster assistance and reduce applications required, identify a FEMA Disaster Recovery Center, locate a hotel or temporary place to live, find food and nutrition programs, apply for change of address, and learn more about SBA loans for homeowners, renters, and businesses.

You also may register by calling 1-800-621-FEMA(3362) or 1-800-462-7585 (TTY). If you use 711, relay or Video Relay Service (VRS), call 800-621- 3362 directly. The toll-free telephone numbers will operate from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. (local time) seven days a week until further notice.

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) announced significant tax relief this week for victims of Hurricane Harvey. Those in Texas impacted by the storm now have until January 31, 2018 to file certain individual and business tax returns and make certain tax payments.
