K-12: A roaring success.

When it comes to education and achievement in Wharton, the roar of the crowd is nothing new. As recent state champs in sports ranging from tennis to track to power lifting, and as band and chorus members who routinely earn superiors in state competitions, Wharton students are used to being widely applauded. Certainly, the applause was always thunderous for Pulitzer- and Academy-Award-winning writer (and Wharton resident) Horton Foote for works such as his Oscar-winning adaptation of To Kill a Mockingbird.

Now a new kind of roar is arising from the Wharton Independent School District, in the form of R.O.A.R. Academy, an innovative Early College High School, blending high school and college curricula simultaneously. That means Wharton High School students can now earn up to 60 hours of college credit through Wharton Junior College while they are still in high school, with “in” being the operative word. While most early college high school programs are located on higher education campuses, Wharton’s R.O.A.R. Academy will be conveniently located on the campus of Wharton High School, providing students both accelerated achievement and convenience.

All throughout the Wharton ISD, students are getting a jump start on life and careers in schools that are looking beyond standards (which they’ve already met) with the application to become a Texas Innovation District, promising even more 21st century improvements and fewer barriers to achievement.
